Too cold to play for Colts?
Players suffer the effects of unusual weather, some hospitalized.
Unusual winter weather conditions last weekend – rain, snow and driving winds – landed 11 football players in the hospital after a football game between Calhoun High School and Sewanhaka’s Carey High School.
Five students from Calhoun were checked for symptoms of hypothermia, a condition that occurs when an individual is exposed to cold air or water and loses body heat rapidly. Symptoms include shivering cold or pale skin and numbness, as well as disorientation. School officials said the students were treated and released within an hour.
A similar incident occurred during the football game between Plainview Kennedy High School and Valley Stream Central High School. However, that game was cut short when weather conditions worsened.
Calhoun-Carey played the entire game as did other area schools, including Freeport-Baldwin and Wantagh-Elmont. But in Seaford the district chose to postpone its final season game to Sunday.
How does the district determine when a game should be postponed or canceled?
In a prepared statement the Bellmore- Merrick Central High School District said it “follows the guidelines set forth by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association that oversees school sports. The guidelines for cancelling a game, which calls for a wind chill of minus 11 degrees or colder, were not met on Saturday.
“The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Bellmore-Merrick Central High School athletic officials met, reviewed National Weather Service reports and concluded the game was safe to play. All factors were in compliance with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.”
