Tidbits of events happening in and around the area.

FUNDRAISING FOR ANIMALS: The Wantagh High School Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America, under the advisement of Christine Compagnino, is fundraising and collecting for the Town of Hempstead (Wantagh) Animal Shelter and the Kent Animal Shelter.             

Students are donating dry and canned dog and cat food, kitty litter, pet toys, dog beds, blankets and pillows, peanut butter, collars and leashes, and dog and cat bowls.  Please contact Ms. Compagnino at compagninoc@wantaghschools.org for more information.


SUPPLIES FOR ANIMALS: The members of the Wantagh Animal Rights and Recycling Club, under the advisement of Geraldine Marten, are also once again collecting supplies for the Last Hope Animal Rescue Center.         

Needed items include: towels and blankets, cat beds, catnip, dog/cat toys, dog shampoo, dog biscuits, cat treats, baby food (chicken or turkey), baby wipes and dog/cat food. Donations may be made through January 13 and dropped off in room 201 of the high school.

BIRD WALK: Join the South Shore Audubon Society for a bird walk at Mill Pond Park from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday, January 8. The group will meet at the park on the north side of Merrick Road, west of the Wantagh State Parkway (Wantagh/Bellmore).

Bring binoculars. Walk leaders and other birders and nature enthusiasts will be happy to share their knowledge and experience with you.  

The bird walk is free of charge. Rain, snow or temperature below 25 degrees F will cancel the bird walk.

BNTY, the youth group of Temple B’nai Torah, 2900 Jerusalem and Oakfield Avenue, Wantagh, will celebrate a community Shabbat on Friday evening, January 24,  at 8 p.m. Members of the youth group will lead the service with creative writings, prayer and song. B’nai Torah Youth, a.k.a. BNTY, a member of the National Federation of Temple Youth, consists of BNTY Junior and BNTY Senior. With trained leadership the youth group has age-appropriate programs centered on Judaism and temple for grades five through twelve. Call BNTY 221-2370 for more information.

LONG ISLAND GENERALS TRAVEL BASEBALL: Baseball Tryout and Workout for Summer 2012 Season for 13-14-year-olds 2-3:30  p.m., 15-16-year-olds 3:30-5 p.m.

Tryouts will be held at Macarthur High School Gym  3369 North Jerusalem Road, Levittown, on Sundays, January 15, 22, 29 and February 12 and 19. Tryouts and teams are run by college baseball players.

TOT SHABBAT:  Temple B’nai Torah, 2900 Jerusalem Avenue, Wantagh (corner of Oakfield), will host a Tot Shabbat service Friday evening January 13, at 5:30 p.m.

The community is invited to join Rabbi Marci Bellows, Cantor Steve Sher, Gail Goldstein and Emily Altman for this special early childhood Shabbat experience of singing  and storytelling. Temple B’nai Torah, a Reform congregation of over 500 families
