Seaford ATF agent laid to rest
United States Attorney General Eric Holder gives eulogy.
AFT Officer and Seaford resident John Capano was laid to rest on Friday, January 6. He was killed in an act of bravery that took his life. Thousands of police officers, friends and neighbors from as far away as California lined Jackson Avenue in Seaford to honor the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms officer.
The funeral procession left the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home on route to the St. William The Abbot Roman Catholic Church. The church was filled to capacity with state, county, local officials and other dignitaries. During the service United States Attorney General Eric Holder delivered one of the eulogies.
The most moving eulogy was given by Officer Capano’s 15-year-old daughter Natalie, a sophomore at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip who read a tribute to her father.
As Agent Capano’s coffin was carried to the white hearse waiting in front of the church, a formation of eight police helicopters flew overhead and escorted the procession to St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. Following prayers the coffin, draped with an American flag, was lowered into the ground while bagpipes played.
Officer Capano died in an attempt to stop career criminal James McGoey, who allegedly robbed a local Seaford drug store. James McGoey was also killed.
