Local soldier visits BMS

Marine Ryan Scheers, son of Baldwin Middle School secretary Maureen Scheers and a former Baldwin student, visited Baldwin Middle School students in Kerri Xjimenez’s and Maria Tobon’s classes on December 23. He spoke about his responsibilities as a private first class. The students in Ms. Tobon’s class were happy to meet him since they had sent him handmade cards while he was deployed in Iraq.  Students in Ms. Xjimenez’s class had many questions, particularly since they recently adopted a platoon and just finished the study of Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq.  “The visit moved many students. They have a deeper appreciation and greater respect for our servicemen and women,” said Ms. Xjimenez.  “He left to a standing ovation.”  Mr. Scheers is in training at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Private Scheers, in full uniform, speaks to Baldwin students.
