DAR essay contest winners saluted
Historical essay contest winners.

The Jerusalem Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announces the winners of the 2011-2012 DAR American History Essay Contest entitled, “Young America Takes a Stand: The War of 1812.”
Seventh- and eighth- graders in the Wantagh Middle School participated in the contest. They are to be especially recognized, as this project was entirely voluntary. Judging was based on historical accuracy, adherence to the subject, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling and punctuation, grammar and neatness.
The seventh grade first place winner is Sandra Re and the first runner-up is Grace Sullivan. The following seventh grade students are also recognized with Honorable Mention: Amanda Adia, Amanda Caruso, Abigail Cullen, Iva Kalinkova, Emily Kaufmann, Alyssa LoCascio, Alexandra Murphy, Kimberly Peragine, Breanna Quod, Nicholas Rosa, Taylor Rossi, Robert Seaman and Hailey Small.
The eighth grade first place winner is Christina DePaulis and the first runner- up is Christopher Geniale. Eighth-grade student Sophia Janotha was recognized with Honorable Mention.
Students who participated in the contest but were not mentioned as winners will receive DAR Certificates of Participation.
Sandra Re and Christina DePaulis’ essays have been forwarded to the New York State DAR Chapter Chairperson for the state competition. The winners will be recognized and receive awards at the Middle School Awards Night in June.
Students in Wantagh High School participated in the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest entitled, “Christopher Columbus: In his Own Time, In History and Today.” The first place winner is ninth-grader Christine Parola and first runner-up is Kayla Knight. Christine Parola’s essay has been forwarded to the New York State DAR Chapter chairperson for the state competition.
The Jerusalem Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution wishes to thank Christopher Widmann, supervisor of the Social Studies Department and the seventh and eighth grade and high school Social Studies teachers for their dedication and help in the contest. Thank you too, to all the students who participated in the contest.
