NM residents approve referendum
Renovation cost to be covered by reserve funds.
A $1.2 million facilities improvement referendum for the North Merrick schools was approved by voters this week. The vote was 181 in favor and 43 opposed.
Capital improvements will be made to Camp Avenue, Fayette and Old Mill Road schools. The money for these improvements comes from existing funds, including surplus money found in the general fund and reserve funds. There will be no increase to the tax levy to make these improvements.
Specifically, the improvements include concrete and asphalt repairs at Camp Avenue and Old Mill Road Schools in the amount of $552,000 as well as the removal and replacement of asbestos flooring at these schools in the amount of $232,000.
Additionally, the district is required to make renovations in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at Fayette and Old Mill Road School for $339,000.
Finally, $20,000 will be spent for the renovation of gymnasium equipment at Fayette. The remaining $57,000 is for contingencies and adjustment of estimates.
