Baldwin priest named honorary canon

CANON Dr. Charles G. Ackerson (back, center) accepts congratulations from his flock at All Saints’ Church, Baldwin.

The Rev. Dr. Charles G. Ackerson, Rector of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Baldwin since 1988, has been named an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, by Bishop Lawrence C. Provenzano of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island and the Cathedral Chapter.
   
Canon Ackerson was officially installed and seated by the Dean of the Cathedral, The Very Rev. Theodore Bean, at Evensong on Sunday, November 6. Canon Ackerson was or-dained at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in 1970 and has served the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island for most of his ministry.
   
In addition to being Rector of All Saints’, Baldwin, Canon Ackerson serves as the Examining Chaplain for Postulants preparing for Holy Orders. He has also served as Professor of Christian Education at the Mercer School of Theology and has conducted numerous workshops for educators throughout the Diocese of Long Island. Canon Ackerson has been active in the Baldwin Interfaith Clergy Association, where he is now the senior member. He is also one of the visiting chaplains at both South Nassau Communities Hospital and Mercy Hospital. He has also been very active in interparish programs both ecumenically and within the Episcopal Church.
   
Canon Ackerson holds numerous degrees, including a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Statistics from SUNY Albany.
   
The people of All Saints Church, Baldwin, honored Canon Ackerson the following Sunday with a special coffee hour and reception.
