More candidates vie for Bellmore Fire Commissioner

Sat, Dec 10, 2011

Editor’s note: This is the second installment providing information on candidates running for the Bellmore Fire Commissioner seat. Last week’s Bellmore Life (Nov. 30) included information on the other two candidates, Craig Maltz and Allison DeQuatro. Voting is on Tuesday, December 13, from 2-9 p.m at the Bellmore Fire Department headquarters, 230 Pettit Avenue.

John Curley

My name is John Curley and I am seeking  a position as a Commissioner of the Bellmore Fire District. As you know, the Bellmore Fire Commission is an elected group of five Bellmore residents, who decide the budget for your fire department.

The commissioners are answerable to you, the Bellmore taxpayers. This is a position of great responsibility, ensuring that your hard-earned tax dollars are spent wisely.

I am a proud, lifelong resident of Bellmore who is raising my family here. I served as a police officer with the New York City  Police Department for four years and the past 17 years as a career firefighter with the Fire Department of the City of New York.

Since joining the Bellmore Fire Department as a junior 28 years ago, I have worked my way up the ranks and served as chief of the department in 2007. Over the years, I served in many committees, gaining experience with working, not only with the Board of Commissioners, but with many firematic vendors, truck manufacturers and building contractors.

It is important to me that the Bellmore Fire Department continues to be the best-trained, best-equipped providers of fire protection and emergency medical services that it can be.

If elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners, I will do my best to maintain these high standards without raising your fire district taxes.

In closing, I ask you for your support.

John Scalesi Jr.

John Scalesi Jr. is running for Commissioner of the Bellmore Fire District.

John Scalesi will save the taxpayer money by bringing  a  vision of fiscal responsibility with every dollar  entrusted to the Fire Commission, and doing it intelligently, having given 25 years of service in the Bellmore Fire Department.

Mr. Scalesi has proposed saving every household nearly $100 per year by having the town take over the private Aqua water company maintenance of the fire hydrants in Bellmore, which costs the taxpayers over $500,000 per year.

Saving money does not mean spending more money, as some of his opponents have suggested. By switching to green products and implementing simple energy reduction practices, the fire department can reduce everyday expenses by reducing the energy used by the fire department without reducing services.

Mr. Scalesi will work with surrounding fire districts to consolidate the ordering of supplies, procuring insurance and consolidating training facilities with other departments at Four Towns Training Center to reduce costs to taxpayers.

Although Mr. Scalesi believes there are ways to save money, he will not sacrifice the safety of the members of the department, nor the safety of the community. He will continue to help advance the department’s training, and provide the best equipment possible to protect the residents of Bellmore.

Voted the Community Person of the Year in Bellmore in 2010, Mr. Scalesi is a lifelong resident of Bellmore, and has demonstrated outstanding dedication and professionalism in all he does.

Honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, Mr. Scalesi retired from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department, has served as a past-president of both the Kiwanis Club and Lions Club, and is a member of the Sons of Italy.

Voted by Newsday as Fireman of the Year in 1991, he is a four-time captain, has three county awards for lifesaving, four town awards for fire and community service, is a New York State fire inspector, an American Red Cross instructor and an inspector for the New York State Athletic Commission.

He also volunteers his time several hours a week to the Mepham High School Key Club.

Please vote for John Scalesi Jr. on Tuesday, December 13, at the Bellmore Fire Department headquarters, 222 Pettit Avenue, from 2-9 p.m.
