T-Mobile argues for cell tower

By Doug Finlay   Fri, Sep 24, 2010

T-Mobile applies to use existing North Bellmore antennae.

Even as the ink dried on the Town of Hempstead's new cell tower law signed this week, T-Mobile argued at the town's zoning Board of Appeals yesterday for a use variance to replace an existing 120-foot antenna at the North Bellmore Fire Department's maintenance facility with a cell tower, because of gaps in its coverage in the North Bellmore area.

North Bellmore fire officials told Bellmore Life at the hearing they support the cell tower, because T-Mobile would pay for its construction and maintanance, and the department would not have to ask the community for taxes to pay for maintenance and new communications facilities in the future.

Meanwhile, the board denied a request by a North Bellmore resident to set up a solarmetric study to see if the shade from the new, slightly larger pole, could affect residents who have solar panels, lowering the ability of those panels to absorb sunlight.

"Residents do not have 'air rights,' Bellmore resident and board Chairman Dave Weiss told the resident. "If the town wanted to construct a building that blocked sunlight from a resident's property, and building ordinances are in place, it would be built."
