Time to be neighborly

By Linda Toscano   Fri, Sep 17, 2010

With everyone back from vacation and the children back in school, local organizations are gearing up with fun fundraisers. It’s time to be neighborly and support these local causes, not just in our own hometown but also in the neighboring towns.

If you want to get healthy, Nassau County and the Village of Freeport are hosting a health fair in Cow Meadow Park, Freeport, on Saturday, September 25, and health professionals from the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce are holding one at World Gym on Sunday, September 26.

The Town of Hempstead has its annual Family Festival by the Sea that weekend as well, and the Merrick Festival will be hosted by the Merrick Chamber of Commerce, with carnival rides by the station and a street fair all the way up Merrick Avenue to R.S. Jones, at the corner of Loines Avenue, where the music will be hopping.

Bellmore plans its famous Family Street Festival for the first weekend in October. And the Seaford Historical Society will host “A Taste of Seaford” restaurant offerings on Tuesday, October 26, to help fund a rehab of its historical building so classes can be given there.

Don't forget to take part in the statewide campaign to support local hometowns by visiting a local business to “Spend $25 on the 25th” of September and help support your hometown. Remember, of every $25 you spend locally,  over $11 stays in your hometown. Your local merchant helps shoulder our tax burden.
