More break-ins at Wantagh Marina
Three more boats damaged at Wantagh Marina.
Three more boats were vandalized at the Wantagh Marina at Wantagh Park sometime in the late evening of Wednesday, September 8. This is the second break-in in eleven days. Nassau County Police Officer Roach of the public information office confirmed that there was “an incident involving three vessels. They suffered losses.”
Bruce Piel, executive director of PARCnassau, told The Citizen that three boats on F dock were “broken into and contents stolen. That is twice in 11 days and should be intolerable to the county adminstration as well as to the boater victims,” he said.
The first break-ins of six boats on Dock B took place sometime between the evening of Thursday, August 26, and the early morning hours of Friday, August 27. Those boats were also burglarized and there was damage to cabin doors. “Wantagh Park is officially closed form dusk to dawn except for boat owners guests and lighted activities. Why isn’t Nassau County enforcing the law?” asked Mr. Piel.
The county has said that there have been increased patrols within the park. Police said the investigation is ongoing. In other park news, The Citizen learned that proposed athletic fees increases in Nassau County parks was brought before the county Legislature’s Public Works and Parks Committee on Monday at 1 p.m.
“This was slipped in to the committee late Friday evening for consideration and a vote today [Monday]. This sort of nonsense is intolerable,” said Mr. Piel. He added that “the administration’s game plan is to get the increases pushed through the four committees and then presented for a final vote by the entire Legislature next Monday [September 20] at 10 a.m.”
He urged residents to call their county legislator to request the tabling of park fees legislation until the public has time to review it. The county had no comment.
