Rabbi Robert Raab dies at 86
Rabbi Robert Raab, rabbi emeritus of Suburban Temple, now Temple B’nai Torah of Wantagh, died on Wednesday, September 30. He was 86 years old. A funeral was held at the temple on Sunday, October 3, temple officials told The Citizen.
Rabbi Raab was the spiritual leader of The Suburban Temple in Wantagh for 36 years, serving thousands of families in Wantagh, Seaford, Levittown, Bellmore, Merrick and East Meadow, beginning his tenure in 1962 and retiring in 1998.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Rabbi Raab graduated from the University of Cincinnati and was ordained at the Hebrew Union College. He received the degree of Doctor of Hebrew Letters and an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree. He served in congregations in Chicago, Illinois, and McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He was also an Air Force chaplain.
During his tenure at Suburban Temple, he was president of the Wantagh Clergy Council and the Long Island Association of Reform Rabbis. He was the author of three books, an adjunct professor at Nassau Community College and a licensed psychotherapist.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Marjorie Klein Raab, with whom Rabbi Raab was living in Manhattan at the time of his death, two sons and four grandchildren.
