Gas leak disrupts neighborhood

A backhoe digging to put in sewers at a new home construction site at Wilson and Hillside Avenues struck a natural gas pipe early this morning, causing a loud roar throughout the neighborhood for over an hour as gas under pressure raced out at 60 pounds per square inch.

No evacuations were reported, but two homes on Wilson Avenue had theirgas shut off. National Grid workers had to dig to find local valves to shut off the gas, and repair the breach

The backhoe operator told Bellmore Life the yellow marks on the street that identify where gas lines are weren’t marked properly.

A utility worker disputed that claim,  saying there may have been a misinterpretation of the marks.

Plumbers working in the neighborhood spoke of a loud, constant rushing noise for over an hour, and the smell of gas all around.
