The reality show of the decade
Last week’s rescue of the 33 Chilean miners trapped almost half a mile underground for over two months captured the hearts of television viewers worldwide. No scripted “Survivor” episode could bring tears of joy to so many people.
We all stayed up late or got up early to watch at least some of the miners emerging from the tube that brought them one by one to the surface. Chile earned the admiration of all for its sensible problem-solving, its technology and especially the way a country’s leadership put its workers first.
We Americans can be proud of the contributions from our space agency, NASA, that played such a critical role in rescuing the miners earlier than expected. Surely, this reality show will go on for many years. There will be all sorts of side stories, many inspiring and some not so much.
But one way in which we all benefited was being reminded of the importance of life and how quickly things can change. In the daily grind, it takes an event like this to make us appreciate the moments in which we are living now. We all feel more grateful to be alive.
