Freeport goes for it all!

Red Devils are 5-0!

FREEPORT 41, FARMINGDALE 21: Maurice Irby scored twice and recovered an onside kick.

Rivalries between the Freeport Red Devils and the Farmingdale Dalers are always intense.  There is a healthy sense of competition between the two teams and it was a logical choice for MSG Varsity to pick these two schools as their game of the week on Thursday, October 6. The game was played at Mitchel Field under the lights.

Farmingdale got on the scoreboard first and then each team exchanged touchdowns and points after until halftime when the score was tied 14-14.  Freeport fans were wondering what was happening.  Were we overrated or was Farmingdale underrated?  The third quarter made that seem like a very foolish question.

The Red Devils scored three touchdowns in a period of six minutes in the third quarter to open a 34-14 lead.  Quarterback Isaiah Barnes couldn’t get off a pass from the Farmingdale 20-yard line and thus went to option 2 – run the ball.  He made some fine moves, leaving the defense behind to score.

He received some great blocks from Leondre Simmon, Jere Brown, Billy Brodsky, Ken Berryhill, Chris Guitierrez, Eric Corona and Evan Lapice. Barnes ran the ball for over 50 yards on a Farmingdale punt to score again. On the next Freeport possession, Barnes handed the ball off to Maurice Irby for a 19-yard touchdown run followed by a 4-yard handoff to Errol Small to complete this scoring effort.

Irby scored the last Red Devils touchdown on a 27-yard TD run.  He also recovered an onside kick late in the fourth to end Farmingdale’s hope of hitting the scoreboard again.

Barnes ran the ball for 154 yards and went 12-16 passing while accumulating 284 yards in the air. Lapice had an exciting 43-yard pass in the first quarter to score the first TD and Jere Brown for 48 yards on a Barnes pass.  Ferdy Torres was 5-6 on the point after attempts.

The Red Devils play Uniondale away on Saturday, October 15 at 2 p.m.

Athletes of the Week
The featured Athletes of the Week are Ferdy Torres and Katie Bentley.

Katie Bentley is a setter on the varsity volleyball team. She has been playing volleyball since seventh grade and has earned four varsity letters and was the academic player of the week. “It’s a way for me to let everything out and I love the rush and excitement of it,” she said.

“Her dedication and work ethic makes her a valuable asset to the team,” reflected Athletic Director Jonathan Bloom.

Katie is a member of the National Honor Society and the Marching Band where serves as section leader. She is an avid dancer and has been a member of the cast for all of the musicals at FHS. She volunteered at the Atkinson summer program and has participated in the caroling activities and Breast Cancer Walk through the school.

Katie hopes to go into a sports medicine and physical therapy program in September.

Ferdy Torres immigrated to the U.S. from Guatemala a little over three years ago.  He has played soccer since the age of seven and has a passion for the sport.  He was very excited to see that FHS had a boys varsity soccer team because he had won many soccer medals in Guatemala.  He plays forward on the soccer team and is one of the leading scorers for the Red Devils.  Football teammate Maurice Irby said “I’ve watched several of his games and he is really fast and very good.”

You read that right – football teammate.  Ferdy never really understood “American football” before coming to the United States but he has become an excellent kicker and punter for the team.  “He averages about 90% on the point after attempts,” reflected Coach Russ Cellan and “he gets better each time he gets on the field.”

Ferdy hopes to play soccer in college.  He is very close with his family and helps his parents at work.
