Getting ready for winter

By Linda Toscano   Fri, Oct 14, 2011

This past weekend must be the “Indian Summer,” the warm days that almost fool you into thinking winter won’t come this year. They have been beautiful days. But we all know winter is coming.

So this week we are offering special pages featuring local businesses that can help you maintain your home and prepare for the winter days ahead. Our Service Directory advertisers are your neighbors and friends.

This is also the time to think about our less-fortunate neighbors and the tougher times they will  face in the winter. Besides help with food, heating, housing and transportation, they will need warm coats and footwear. As you bring down your winter clothes from the attic, please think about which ones you really need and which ones you could share with others through one of our local religious or civic organizations.

It is neighbor helping neighbor that really warms your heart.

A thank you to Steve Jobs
Like many other community newspapers, yours owes a lot to the inventive mind of Apple’s Steve Jobs. At the time of his passing, we also reflect on all he has given to the world.

Back in the 1980s, when this newspaper was still produced by a Compugraphic and the manual paste-up method, we got our first Mac SE and its printer. One production worker laughingly called it “the sacred cow” because at first it was hardly used. Now, our entire production system is based on Apple computers, which have unleashed the creativity of our designers and let writers in on the design process as well.

Soon, we know we will be designing the news not only for our print newspaper and website but also for our readers’ iPhones and  iPads, as well as similar platforms from other companies.

Steve Jobs had the ability to “think outside the box,” making the computer accessible intuitively to everybody with minimal training. He shrank the size of a music player while making its menu unlimited. And, eventually, he brought the written word, music, games, video and telephone via the Internet together in one small handheld device, the iPhone. The iPad, a tablet computer with a touch screen, puts learning even more on-the-go. As a result, the creativity of so many has increased exponentially and so many horizons have been lifted.

Just imagine what the future will bring!
