Patricia Wright of Seaford – 2011 Mother of the Year
Chosing the "Wright" mom for the honor.
THE WRIGHT FAMILY, from left, Kelly, Katie, Kristy, holding son Landon, Billy, Mother of the Year Patricia, and husband Bill.
A mother’s love is not brash or bold, but it is enduring. Just ask the five Wright children of Seaford, who know they have been blessed with a terrific mother; a woman who taught her children how to roll up their sleeves to get things done, with humor and compassion and love.
“I had five children in eight years,” explained Mother of the Year Patricia Wright. Her first three children Kristy, Katie and Kerri are each a year apart. Then came Kristy and last but not least Billy. Four months ago, Mrs. Wright became a grandmother to Landon William.
“I don’t know how I did it. But we were young. We [husband William] were a terrific team. He [William] is a natural father, always ready to help, and, well, we both had a lot of energy, laughed Mrs. Wright.
Energy? Sounds more like the Energizer Bunny to me. In addition to Mrs. Wright’s responsibilities as a wife and mother, she held down two jobs – working with her parents, who own a commercial driver business, and working in her husband’s landscaping business. About 18 months ago, Mrs. Wright took on another job – she opened the Ikon Boutique with her daughters. Ikon Boutique is a retail clothing boutique on Merrick Road in Seaford.
Speaking of Seaford, Mrs. Wright has deep roots in town. Her mother was born in Seaford and her father began his business in Seaford 50 years ago. Mrs. Wright has lived in Seaford since she was four years old. Her children were raised in Seaford, attending St. William’s and four of her five children still live in town.
Mrs. Wright learned she was the 2012 Mother of the Year at a celebratory brunch on Sunday for her birthday. “I was truly surprised. It’s awesome.”
In closing, Mrs. Wright said she would “never trade my life. We are an extremely close family and I have the greatest kids in the world. We’ve had bumps in the road but we stick together.”
Congratulations, Patricia Wright, and a Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers of Wantagh and Seaford.
As Mother of the Year, Mrs. Wright will receive the following gifts: Brunch for two from Hemingway’s American Bar and Grill; a special gift from Wantagh Bootery; a $25 gift certificate from Romano’s Pork Store; a $50 dinner gift certificate from the Wantagh Inn; a flower arrangement for mom from Numa’s Florist; a $20 gift certificate from Slap-Happy Baking Company; a $25 gift certificate from Concord Drive-in Cleaners; a $10 gift certificate from Wantagh 5 & 10; a $60 gift certificate for a haircut and styling by Juanita from Majestic Salon & Spa; a $25 gift certificate from New Wave Seafood; one free week for two from World Gym of Wantagh; a gift basket for mom from Iavarone Bros.; a $25 catering or take-out gift certificate from Seaford Deli, a $25 gift certificate from Animal Appetites LTD and a one-year subscription to the Wantagh Seaford Citizen.
Winning Letter
This letter is from the hearts of five children, writing to tell you about one outstanding woman: our mom, Patricia “Trish” Wright of Seaford.
We are all close, not only in age, but with each other (now in our twenties and teens). Looking back, it cannot have been easy raising us. Picture getting five teenage kids up and dressed for school each day; or losing a work day to care for us when we all seemed to have coughs and colds on the same day. Imagine too the mediating skills Mom had when we five argued...more often than not!
We’re not rich...but neither poor. Our mom and dad worked long hours each day (still do) to provide the needs of four girls and a boy growing up on Long Island, with plans to attend college. Mom has always held down two jobs (so did Dad) while giving us her undivided, individual love.
And we cannot remember a time when Mom did not provide individual support and guidance in our education, health and careers along with the best advice on “growing up.” Her approach was and still is – face each challenging situation with concern, but also confidence, love and humor.
Today Mom continues to juggle caring for her children with the retail clothing business she opened a couple of years ago and helping with our dad’s business. Considering all our mom does, she has never missed our games or events. The five of us still look to her when in need of a strong, compassionate woman who truly loves us.
Today she’s also the “go-to gal” when assistance is needed with her first grandson, now four months old!
Than you for considering Trish Wright as The Citizen’s Mother of the Year. She has certainly earned it...and continues to do so!
The Wright children:
Kelly, Katie, Kerri, Kristy and Billy
