Nassau police arrested a Roosevelt man for burglary and criminal possession of stolen property that occurred in North Merrick on Monday at 3:29 p.m.
According to detectives, First Precinct police officers, while on routine patrol in a car equipped with a license plate reader, were alerted to a stolen vehicle on Lakeside Avenue. While following the vehicle they observed several Vehicle and Traffic Law infractions, and then pulled the car over on Camp Avenue and Meadowbrook Road.
Terence Raye, 19, the driver of the vehicle, fled the scene with the officers following in foot pursuit. The suspect removed a bicycle from a yard, pedaled down Washington Avenue, jumped off the bike and ran onto the Meadowbrook Parkway, police said. There was an area-wide search using a police helicopter, K-9 dogs and foot cops. The suspect then ran into a residence on Sumner Avenue, where he was located by police officers (about one mile south from where the cops lost the suspect). The suspect was not known by the homeowners.
Merrick Avenue Middle School and Calhoun High School were in lockdown until the suspect was apprehended. All the practicing sports teams were brought inside from the fields.
Calhoun senior Kara Iskenderian said, “We were stuck in the school for approximately an hour. They [the administration] told all the students practicing sports to go in the building; we filed in and stayed there.” Kara commends Calhoun on the efficiency of the lockdown and believes “if [a suspect] was running around Merrick, then it was necessary.”
Freshman Alex Zseller believed there was some confusion among students regarding what was actually happening outside Calhoun at the time. “We didn’t know what the cops were doing to get the [suspect],” he said.
