A man was killed in a car crash exiting the Meadowbrook Parkway at 1:06 p.m. on a damp grey Monday, May 16.
State police said that 73-year-old Frederick Deppert, a resident of Miller Avenue in Freeport, was being driven by his 48-year-old son, Frederick J. Deppert, in a grey 2002 Lexus.
They were southbound on the Meadowbrook Parkway, and exiting at the eastbound Merrick Road exit ramp when Mr. Deppert lost control, veered left off the ramp, skidded and slid on the wet grass, striking a cluster of roadside trees head-on just beyond the curb.
The younger Mr. Deppert was wearing a seatbelt, and his airbag deployed properly. He was evaluated at the Nassau University Medical Center, where he had been transported by the Merrick Fire Department after its volunteers extracted him from the vehicle. He suffered bi-lateral fractures to both of his arms.
Police reported that the elder Mr. Deppert appeared to be not wearing his seatbelt and died in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Nassau police medics.
A state police investigation of the incident is continuing.
