Two abandoned suitcases, thought to be bombs with wires protruding from the bottoms, were discovered in Bellmore and Merrick this past weekend at two supermarket shopping centers.
Memorial scholarship awarded

Merrick Life attended the first annual presentation of the Philip L. Williams memorial scholarship. Named for the former Commander of the Merrick Post of the American Legion 1282, the awarded was given by the family to a graduating high school senior who personified the qualities of Mr. Williams.

Bomb scare in Bellmore

A suitcase closed down King Kullen and Sunrise Highway late Friday afternoon while the Nassau County Bomb Squad investigated the contents, which included protruding wires. After two hours, the squad determined the contents as an erector set, a chemistry set and other household items. A similar suitcase closed Merrick’s Waldbaum’s shopping center the next day.
