Nassau Coliseum Vote: How to vote absentee for August 1
Going out of town? You can still vote on the upcoming referendum.
With the upcoming referendum on August 1, Merrick Life would like to remind its readers of the application process for absentee ballots.
If you are planning on mailing in your application for an absentee ballot apply as soon as possible, because the application must be postmarked seven days before August 1. The application can be found online at www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/BOE/vote.html#register.
Once the application has been received, a ballot will be mailed to you, (hopefully on the same day the Board of Elections receives it) and must be postmarked by July 30. The ballot must be received by the Board of Elections no more than seven days after the polling day.
You can also call the Nassau County Board of Elections at 571-2411. Because time is getting short, Bonnie Garone, the chief clerk at the Board of Elections, recommends people unable to get to the Board of Elections try and fax a letter of request to the Nassau County Board of Elections. The fax number is 571-2058.
If you cannot wait for the mail or do not have enough time, you can go directly to the Nassau County Board of Elections office, at 240 Old Country Road, Mineola. You can fill out an application and get your ballot within a few minutes and then vote at the same time.
According to Ms. Garone, you do not need to bring special identification as long as you are a registered voter.
The Nassau County Board of Elections is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday – Friday. The Board of Elections will also be open on Saturday, July 30, and from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, for this special election.

Referendum Question as it will appear on the ballot August 1
Shall a local law be approved to establish “The Nassau County Hub Area Development Parogram” (the “Hub Program”) and to (i) authorize the expenditure of up to $400,000,000 to be bonded by the county and expended solely for the construciton of projects in the Hub area including a new Nassau Coliseum, a minor league baseball stadium and other economic development proejcts, (ii) establish a line on property tax bills dedicated to the payment of the debt service association with the Hub Program, and to (iii) to establish the special revenue fund dedicated exclusively to the payment of the debt service on the bonds issued pursuant to the Hub Program?
What it means:
- The referendum seeks voter approval of a local law to establish “The Nassau County Hub Area Devleopment program.” It is the intent of the Program to fund construction projects in the Hub area, including a new sports arena to replace the existing Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a new minor league ballpark and to promote economic development.
- This local law would authorize Nassau County to expend up to $4 million and to establish a tax levy dedicated to the payment of the bond.
- The tax levy is estimated to cost $58 per household for an average house assessed at $400,000. You would pay less if your house is assessed at less than $400,000 or more if your house is assessed for more than $400,000.
