Wantagh’s town animal shelter gets vets
Animal shelters gets vet services.
The Town of Hempstead has retained two veterinarians for animal and emergency animal medical services at the town’s animal shelter in Wantagh, said town officials.
Dr. Martin Zipkin of the Hewlett Animal Hospital and Dr. Jeffrey Siegel, who operates a mobile vet clinic, will provide on-site care for the animals within the town’s shelter. The veterinarians will work 42 hours per week, including six-hour shifts seven days per week.
The veterinarians will work with an animal behaviorist recently retained by the town as well as animal control officers and kennel workers to conduct rounds, examine animals that come into the shelter and administer medical care. The town’s animal behavioralist will work to determine which pets may be in need of rehabilitative care to address anti-social traits and ensure successful adoptions.
The Town of Hempstead shelter has come under scrutiny recently when several volunteers alleged the shelter did not have basic services to care for its animal population. Derek Donnelly of Merrick, an organizer for a group called Hope for Hempstead Shelter, has called for sweeping changes at the shelter to address problems.
“We’re working hard to create the best environment for cats and dogs who come into the town’s animal shelter,” stated town Supervisor Kate Murray.
“I am pleased that Dr. Zipkin and Dr. Siegel are joining our team to enhance the medical services provided to Hempstead Town’s animal friends,” added Councilwoman Angie Cullin.
