What will you miss?

By Linda Toscano   Fri, Feb 11, 2011

This week your community newspaper brings you the annual pre-Valentine’s Day Bridal and Travel issue. And once again we are reminded of the importance of romance in our lives. Romantic memories can resurface in surprising ways. Remember “The Parent Trap” Hayley Mills edition?

There is a scene where Brian Keith tells Maureen O’Hara what he missed the most during over a decade of separation: the stockings hanging in his bathroom and the hairpins in his tackle box! He was talking about those irritating things he must have wished away a thousand times when they were together.

All of us have those little things that irritate us about those we love. Does your husband use your fancy hostess towels to clean up a mess? Is your wife always late getting dressed for a party? Can you imagine that one day you will miss all that?

Valentine’s Day is a moment to stop and remember how important s/he is every day of your life. Flowers speak movingly about how beautiful and fleeting our time together is. Chocolates, they say, bring us a chemically induced feeling of happiness.  A meal out marks a special occasion. Cards and jewels make a promise our love will last forever.

Scouts make our town better

During Boy Scout Week, our community honors an association that has helped generations of boys become better men. And many of those Scouts have conducted Eagle Projects that have helped make our community a better place, too.  The Faith Laursen Meroke Preserve on the Bellmore/Merrick border, named for the former publisher of this newspaper, is one of many sites that have benefited over the years from their work.
