Breaking News on local cell tower issue
T-Mobile files an appeal.
T-Mobile, the telecommunications giant, filed an appeal in federal court in Central Islip on January 20, to challenge the Town of Hempstead’s Zoning Board of Appeals decision to deny the building of 12 antenna on the roof of the Farmingdale-Wantagh Jewish Center on Woodbine Avenue in Wantagh.
Jeanine Boiko, spokesperson for the Wantagh Civic Association, told The Citizen the group was “not surprised by T-Mobile’s decision to appeal. We are prepared to take the necessary steps to continue our fight against this proposed cell installation in our neighborhood.”
The Town of Hempstead was unable to comment prior to press time.

In other news, there was another demonstration outside the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter on Saturday, February 5. Despite the rain and cold, 118 people marched outside of the shelter calling for an investigation into the shelter, said Derek Donnelly, an organizer for Hope for Hempstead Shelter. He told The Citizen the group is initiating a letter-writing campaign to state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli urging him to audit the shelter.
“It is the state comptroller’s responsibility to audit municipalities and government agencies. We believe this should be done because the town can’t investigate themselves,” he said.
Mr. Donnelly is referring to the town’s own investigation into the shelter. The town contacted the Nassau County district attorney’s office, which has launched its own investigation. The town has repeatedly said the issues under investigation are administrative in nature.
