Pep talk can inspire us all

By Linda Toscano   Fri, Dec 03, 2010

I don’t know a lot about football, but I do know something about spirit. And as we saw the ticker go by on a television screen overheadwith the Giants’ score during the first half of their game Sunday, it was as discouraging as these last years’ economic news.

Then, we hear, team Captain Justin Tuck showed true leadership at halftimeby admitting hehad been playing like “garbage”and telling the whole team they could do better too. Going down fighting would be better than losing that way. And the Giants kept at it through the second half to win!

This town, this whole country, perhaps this whole world could use a pep talk like that. Things may be tough, and we may have made mistakes, but we have to keep on fighting to win as a team, keep on looking for a way out of the bad times and into the good.

They say it is always darkest before the dawn. But as Rabindranath Tagore wrote, “Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark.”And in many world religions, candles are used to represent the tiny glow offaith that can bring hope.

In the days ahead, our Jewish readers will light menorahs to commemorate the miracle of Chanukah in which the oil in the temple lamp lasted for eight days.

Our Christian readers will light Advent candles, one each Sunday until Christmas.

This is how we share the holiday spirit, how we remind ourselves of the importance of faith in our lives.
