The Wantagh Board of Education approved the receipt of a total of over $50,000 in grant money from two Nassau County legislators at its November 18 meeting.

A grant of $15,000 from Legislator David Denenberg, Democrat of Merrick, will be used toward the purchase of SMART Boards for the high school, while a $35,380 grant from Legislator Dennis Dunne, Republican of Levittown, will be used for lockers at Wantagh Middle School and doors at Forest Lake and Wantagh Elementary [Beech Street] Schools.

Board President Jean Quinn and Wantagh Schools Superintendent Dr. Lydia Begley thanked both legislators for these generous grants.

As part of its professional staff personnel actions, the board approved the appointments of Jennifer Florio, special education teacher, and Marie Sweeney, reading teacher; a part-time teaching appointment for Maria Flood; and appointment of permanent substitutes Kathryn Alvarado and Kerri Spatz. Dr. Begley warmly welcomed the new teachers to the district.

Members of Student Government reported on several student achievements, including the boys’ soccer team making it to the county finals; the football team reaching the semifinals; and the girls’ volleyball team going from county to Long Island champions to competing at the state level.

Additionally, a student food drive donated over 1,000 pounds of food to Island Harvest, and a shoe drive is in progress.

Speaking on behalf of Wantagh Foundation President Ralph Spagnolo, school board  Trustee Michael Cucci reported that the next computer class will take place on December 11.

“There’s always room for more seniors who would like to learn to use the computer, so come on down,” said Mr. Cucci.

Diane Wenz, representing the Wantagh 6-12 Association, reported that a bowling night for middle school students will be held on December 10.

The next Wantagh Board of Education meeting, featuring Superintendent Begley’s State of the District Report, will take place on Thursday, December 9, at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Transcripts of this and previous board meetings are available at the school district’s website,  wantaghschools.org.
