Not too late to have a green holiday
December 31 is the deadline to complete projects that qualify for a 30% federal tax credit for energy efficiency home improvement projects, according to Renewable Energy Long Island. Projects that could be covered include biomass stoves, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), insulation, roofing, water heaters and windows and doors. (Visit the energystar website for more information.)
A new LIPA solar hot water rebate program began this month. Residential customers can get $20 per kBTU (up to $1,500 or 50% of the total installed cost, whichever is less). Also, New York gives a 25% tax credit in addition to the federal 30% tax credit.
Renewable energy tax credits such as for solar photo voltaic (PV) cell installations, solar hot water and wind systems do not expire until December 2016.
Speaking of the holidays, if you are buying new lights, go for LED lights, which cost less to light up and last at least twice as long. Don’t forget to recycle your old holiday lights by mail and get a 25%-off coupon for LED at holidayleds.com.
Thanks, Dave!
County Legislator Dave Denenberg recently wrote to Nassau County Parks Commissioner Carnell Foskey and Public Works Commissioner Shila Shah-Gavnoudias, a Bellmore resident, regarding the former waterworks building in the Faith Laursen Meroke Preserve on the Bellmore-Merrick border, which is covered in graffiti, and has holes in its roof and side.
He also requested increased police surveillance of the area from the county’s Seventh Precinct police. He noted that illegal activities at the site “negatively impact on the quality of life of residents who utilize the preserve,” and we would add, also the young people themselves.
We appreciate his efforts and hope the site will indeed soon be inspected, repaired, cleaned up and made safe.
