For teen girls: A book that hits close to home

by Cristina Toscano

What would your reaction be if someone asked you to be the star of the hottest new reality TV show? Just imagine! You could be fist-pumping with the cast of “Jersey Shore” or “Kickin’ it with the Kardashians!”

In fact, you would be so famous that they would be begging you to go to their parties! Your face would be on the cover of hundreds of magazines!

Everyone would know your name! Everyone would know your friends’ names! Everyone would know every decision you make and hear everything you say!

But nothing you say could ever be taken back. Every mistake you make would be broadcasted to millions of people. Your privacy would be taken away. That cute guy who finally likes you back, he might be pushed away too. Well, on second thought, maybe having a reality TV show isn’t the coolest thing… Jen Calonita’s latest book, “Reality Check,” takes a look at the life of an average everyday girl and her once-in-a-lifetime shot at being the star of her very own reality TV show.

The novel takes the reader on an adventure of friendship and betrayal. It shows that love and friendship are much more important than fame and fortune. Maybe some of our favorite reality TV stars should pick up a copy? This novel hits close to home, literally. So close, in fact, that the author lives in Merrick. You can even meet her at certain events at the local library. The novel itself takes place nearby, on Long Island’s North Fork. It mentions places we’ve all heard of, such as The Hamptons and Greenport. One scene takes place at a street fair much like our Fall Festival and KidsFest. Hmm…I wonder where Jen got her inspiration!

This book is the perfect summer read. So grab a beach chair, your cutest bathing suit and a copy of “Reality Check.” After all, who doesn’t need an escape so close to home just before school starts again?
