A look ahead at what Baldwin Schools have to offer.

A message from Baldwin Superintendent Dr. James Mapes
Dr. James Mapes

I hope you and your family had a wonderful summer and are ready for an exciting year of school ahead!  Despite the setback in state funding for schools, the Baldwin School District is starting the school year strong with the preservation of academic programs and the hiring of new teachers in special education, foreign language and guidance.

We also extend a warm welcome to Edward Cullen as assistant superintendent for business and administrative services. By early fall, you will notice SMART Boards in every classroom at the elementary level and by the end of the year at the secondary level, funded through an active search for available grants.

At Baldwin High School, the career academy program, introduced last year to focus curriculum on careers in medicine, engineering and business, has been extended and expanded as an option for both ninth and tenth graders. The Fundations reading and spelling program will also expand into second grade while FASTT Math, a math intervention program, and BookFLIX, an online literacy resource, will be utilized in classes in grades K-5.

New this year is a trimester report card system for elementary students that will provide additional time in each marking period to better assess student performance. In addition, progress reports in the second and third marking periods will further support parent-teacher communication.

Also starting this year is the alternative learning program for secondary students.

By moving maintenance facilities to Milburn School, four classrooms and dedicated office space have been constructed at the District Office over the summer. The program will include students in the existing Homebound Tutoring Center as well as many students who previously required out-of-district placement.

With these initiatives in place, I am looking forward to partnering with you to ensure the continued success of our Baldwin students.
