A report from the meeting of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.

Central High School District trustees approved first and second readings of several policies and other agenda items, including approval of the allocation of the district’s tax levy to the component districts for 2010-11. The policy readings were revisions to policies already in place affecting relations with parent organizations, BOCES, nonpublic schools, student activities fund management, purchasing and contracting for professional services. Board members took the following actions:

  • Approved the out-of-district summer school tuition rate of $375 per course and $80 per Regents course.
  • Approved a $2,000 increase for 2010-11 with Nassau BOCES for professional development for the art and music programs.
  • Authorized an agreement between the district and TEMPO for three consultants/group leaders/social workers for the CHSD’s Human Connections and Life Skills programs at a cost of $33,516, representing a 1.5% increase.
  • Approved a lease agreement with the TEMPO Group for office space at Brookside School through August 31, 2011.
  • Approved an agreement with United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County for space at Brookside School for use as a temporary evacuation site under an emergency management plan through June 30, 2011.
  • Approved the establishment of a $250 scholarship, the Lewis J. Serra Award, for a graduating Kennedy High and a Mepham High senior who is also a former Grand Avenue student. The scholarship will be funded by vending machine profits.
  • Authorized “Prep Program” tuition agreements with Nassau County school districts.
  • Approved a $26,680 budget transfer from the BOCES library account to a library contractual account under a new system.
  • Authorized an agreement with the Newbridge Arena for the 2010-11 school year at a cost of $365 per hour.
  • Trustees also heard an appeal from a district parent, Gary Friedman, for transportation to a nonpublic school for his daughter. He was appealing an earlier request that had been denied because he had missed the filing deadline. Board President Nina Lanci said the board would consider his request in executive session.
  • Following up on the use of district athletic fields by outside groups that was discussed at the board’s July meeting, Matt Kurzweil of the Police Athletic League thanked the board for its ultimate decision after the meeting to allow limited use of the fields for soccer and lacrosse until October 31, and said that PAL would submit a new proposal for field use in the spring.
