Village installs trustees, makes yearly appointments

Freeport Board of Trustees conducted the annual organizational meeting Monday before a large turnout of residents.
   
Re-elected Trustees William H. White III and Jorge Martinez took the oath of office at the outset of the meeting, followed by Cynthia Baker, appointed to a one-year term as associate village justice.
   
Mr. White was sworn in by former Village Justice Roy Cacciatore; Mr. Martinez by Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla.
   
Mayor Andrew Hardwick administered the oath to Ms. Baker.
   
Both Mr. White and Mr. Martinez expressed appreciation to the voters and pledged to work closely with the mayor and trustees in a spirit of respect and cooperation.
   
Mr. Martinez also thanked the village employees for their service to the community.
   
Following the oaths of office, Mayor Hardwick read the following list of nominees for village offices for one year terms, for trustees’ approval: Howard E. Colton, village attorney; J. Barrington Jackson, deputy attorney; Paul Nehrich, assessor; James B. Smith, deputy assessor/auditor; Bergica McBride, deputy clerk; Steven Lieberman, comptroller; Raymond Maguire, secretary to the Fire Department; Tamiko Alston, registrar; Valerie Montes, deputy treasurer; Richard Holdener, director of Emergency Management; Cynthia Mitchell, secretary to the Mayor and Board of Trustees; Milagros Mattei, secretary to the Zoning Board of Appeals’
   
During the roll call vote, Trustees White and Martinez voted no, giving as a reason their desire that each nominee be voted on individually. The other three board members approved the nominees.
   
Nominees for the following positions received unanimous approval.
   
Harold Mahoney and Bishop Ronald H. Carter; as members of the Board of Ethics, for a term of four years; and as Board of Ethics chairman for one year.
   
Robert Weltner, member of the Commission for the Conservation of the Environment of Freeport, for a five-year term; and as chairman for one year.
   
Thomas Taylor as chairman of the Highway Commission for one year.
   
The Rev. Eddie Jusino as Commission on Human Relations chairman for one year. Marsha Drummond as Human Relations Commission vice-chair for one year.
   
Jerome Martin as a board member of the Sewer and Sanitation Commission for a four-year term, and a board chairman for one year.
   
Other appointees are:
   
Steven Krupka, William Walsh, Robert DiPolito, Lester Endo, Charles Garritano, Lester Endo, Jr., and Christian Castillo as Electrical Board members for a  one-year term each. William Walsh as Electrical Board chairman for one year.
   
Kenneth R. Dash Sr., Planning Board chairman for one year.
   
Umberto Thomas as Zoning Board chairman for one year; and Eloy Yndigoyen as deputy chairman of the Zoning Board for one year.
   
Jonathan Smith as dog control officer for a one-year term.
   
Ralph Franco, Jr., Robert McLaughlin, Ferlande Milord, Ernest Jones, Barbara Solomon, Chris Gomoka, and Lisa Walker as special prosecutors for one-year terms.
   
Named to the Mayor’s Advisory Veterans Council for one-year terms are Paul Zydor, Stephen A. Nicolino, Ed Monroe, Robert Pachas, Lincoln Parsons, Thomas Riley, Alan Jay, Bernard J. Rader, Arthur Weaver, Calvin L. Andrew, Jessica Flores, and Paul Nehrich, who will also serve as chairman.
   
Public Safety Committee members appointed for one-year terms are: Scott Richardson, Anthony Fiore, Donald Rowan, Richard Holdener, Miguel Bermudez, Richard Brown and Evelyn Morales. Police Chief Bermudez will serve as chairman.
   
Senior Citizens Council members are Denise Campbell, Rochelle Brodsky, and Christine Chaplin, who will also serve as chairman. Terms are for one year.
   
Cynthia Krieg was named as village historian for a one-year term, and Ysabeba M. Jaquez was appointed as an advocate for the handicapped.
   
Designated as depositories of Village funds are J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Citibank, TD Bank f/k/a Commerce Bank, MBIA Municipal Investors Corp., Wachovia North America, RBC Dain Raucher, UBS Financial Services, Inc., Banco Popular, City National Bank, and Hanover Community Bank.
    
Officially designated newspapers for a one-year period are The Leader, and/or Tribuna Hispana USA, Noticias Hispanoamericana, The Freeport Chronicle and the Roosevelt/Freeport Times, newspapers having a general circulation in the Village of Freeport.
